Kim Tan
Counsel
Kim L. Tan is an experienced Maryland attorney whose career has been dedicated to litigation, courtroom advocacy, and representing individuals in some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Since earning her law degree from Widener University School of Law in 2013, she has built an impressive record of public service, handling thousands of cases involving criminal prosecutions, domestic violence, child support, protective orders, and family-related legal disputes. Most recently, she served as an Assistant State's Attorney for Howard County, where she represented the State in both District and Circuit Court, investigated complex cases, worked closely with victims and witnesses, prepared matters for trial, and prosecuted misdemeanor and felony offenses through every stage of litigation. Her years in the courtroom have given her exceptional trial experience and the confidence to advocate effectively when clients face challenging legal disputes.

Before joining the Howard County State's Attorney's Office, Ms. Tan served as an Assistant State's Attorney in Baltimore City, prosecuting domestic violence cases and managing demanding court dockets involving dozens of active matters each week. She also represented the State of Maryland as Special Counsel with the Office of the Attorney General, where she litigated child support, paternity, modification, and contempt proceedings on behalf of Maryland families. Earlier in her career, she represented survivors of domestic violence as a Staff Attorney with House of Ruth Maryland, advocating for clients seeking protective orders and other legal relief while helping them navigate highly emotional and often dangerous circumstances. Combined with her judicial clerkship in the Family Part of the New Jersey Superior Court, where she drafted judicial opinions and assisted with emergency custody matters, these experiences provide her with a comprehensive understanding of how family law cases are evaluated from every perspective.

What distinguishes Ms. Tan is her combination of seasoned courtroom advocacy and a genuine commitment to helping families through conflict with professionalism, compassion, and careful preparation. She earned a Master's Degree in Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation and is a certified mediator, giving her a unique appreciation for both negotiated resolutions and effective litigation when settlement is not possible. Whether advocating before a judge, negotiating with opposing counsel, or guiding clients through difficult personal circumstances, she brings meticulous preparation, practical judgment, and unwavering dedication to achieving the best possible outcome. Clients benefit from an attorney whose career has been built on standing beside people during life's most challenging moments while providing the skilled legal representation and steady guidance they deserve.
